Writing for Reviews in American History in 2014, Jama Lazerow applauds Black Against Empire as the first authoritative account of the Black Panthers. is simply to treat the Black Panthers as the serious political and cultural force they were." As "the most dramatic failing in Black Against Empire", Tobar points to "the authors' lack of critical distance from their subject" which produces images of "Panther leaders who are, for the most part, idealists without noticeable flaws." ![]() ![]() I skimmed occasionally but more on that later. Obviously, I had to say almost because I did technically read most of it. I do see that many people love this book, but I found it almost totally unreadable. ![]() I thought the phrasing was awkward, occasionally there were completely unnecessary prepositions, the language got repetitive in a way that I assume makes total sense in the original, but I felt it could have been translated much more elegantly. I found the language incredibly clunky throughout the entire book. Still, I am absolutely certain I will never read anything translated by Suika again. I don't know which complaints are indicative of which person because I cannot read the original. I think I hate both the writing style and the translation. The only reason I made it past the prologue is that I organized a book club that is reading this book, and I didn't want to drop out on literally the first book we read. If you don't want to hear someone say nothing nice about a thing you love, feel free not to keep reading. ![]() I very much did not like this reading experience. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the prologue to Book 5, To Sir Phillip, With Love, however, we learn Eloise is quite excited for her first season and has high hopes about finding her perfect match.īack in the Netflix series, Eloise’s presentation is interrupted by the arrival of the latest edition of Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers. ![]() In the television series, she is beset by nerves, having no desire to take part in society events. The extravagant settings and characters throughout the series are addicting, their stories full of intrigue and suspense. I enjoyed each one as much as I did the first time I read them. I began with Interview with the Vampire in late August, and finished with Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis in November. In 2019, I decided to finish up the series, but first I went back to the beginning and read the books in order. ![]() ![]() Rice continued to publish Vampire Chronicles for many years thereafter and I read each book as it came out. By the time I turned sixteen years old, I had read every book in the series that had already been published. Therefore, I began reading Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles very young. ![]() I was an avid reader even then and would often raid my parent’s bookshelves when I ran out of age-appropriate material. When I was a little girl, my mother had a well read and worn collection of Anne Rice paperbacks haphazardly arranged on the particle board bookshelf in our den.
